Benefits Of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a time-tested healing practice that’s been used for over 2,500 years — and it’s backed by science for treating more than 300 health conditions. By gently inserting hair-thin needles at key points on the body, acupuncture stimulates your body’s internal messenger system to trigger powerful healing responses. It can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve digestion, support better sleep, and ease stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also a natural beauty booster — known to smooth wrinkles, calm inflammation, and stimulate collagen production for glowing, healthy skin.

FAQ

What is Acupuncture

What it is: Acupuncture is a traditional East-Asian medical practice that uses very thin, sterile needles inserted at specific points to stimulate the body’s natural healing responses. It can be used for pain relief, digestive issues, stress, sleep problems, and many other conditions.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Answer: Most patients feel minimal or no pain. Needles are hair-thin and usually cause only a brief, mild sensation (tingling, warmth, or heaviness). Many people find the session deeply relaxing and sometimes fall asleep. (If you are needle-averse, tell your practitioner — there are techniques to make it gentler.)

Is acupuncture safe?

Answer: When provided by a licensed practitioner using single-use sterile needles, acupuncture is generally very safe. Common minor side effects include mild soreness, slight bruising, or temporary tiredness. Serious complications are rare. Always tell your practitioner about medications (e.g., blood thinners), pregnancy, or bleeding disorders.

How many sessions will I need?

Answer: It depends on the condition. Acute issues may improve in a few sessions; chronic conditions often require a course of weekly treatments for several weeks. Many clinics start with an initial series (e.g., 4–8 sessions) and then reassess. Your practitioner will recommend a personalized plan.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Answer: Acupuncture is used for many conditions including chronic pain (back, neck, shoulder), headaches/migraines, digestive issues, insomnia, stress & anxiety, women’s health (menstrual disorders, fertility support), and some skin issues. Evidence varies by condition, but there is good support for pain and some other disorders.

What happens during my first visit?

Answer: The first visit usually includes a detailed intake — medical history, current symptoms, medications, and lifestyle. You’ll have a physical examination (including tongue/pulse in TCM clinics), followed by a tailored treatment (needling, possible cupping or moxa). Expect the whole visit to take ~45–75 minutes.

Are there any people who should NOT have acupuncture?

Answer: Acupuncture is generally safe, but caution is needed for people on blood thinners, with bleeding disorders, pacemakers (for some electroacupuncture), or during certain stages of pregnancy. Always disclose medications and medical conditions.

Can acupuncture help with stress & sleep?

Answer: Many patients report improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and lower stress after acupuncture. Research shows acupuncture can modulate the nervous system and promote relaxation responses. Results vary by individual.

Can acupuncture help with fertility & women’s health?

Answer: Acupuncture is frequently used to support menstrual regulation, reduce menstrual pain, and as an adjunct to fertility treatments. Some studies suggest benefits for improving uterine blood flow and stress reduction, which can support reproductive efforts. Practitioners will coordinate with your medical team as needed.

Will insurance cover acupuncture?

Answer: Coverage varies widely by insurer and plan. Some plans cover acupuncture for specific conditions; others do not. We can verify your insurance benefits before your first visit. Self-pay session fees also vary by clinic and treatment type.

Do you use single-use needles?

Answer: Yes — we use single-use, disposable sterile needles and follow strict hygiene protocols. Proper sterilization and clean technique minimize infection risk.

How should I prepare for an appointment?

Answer: Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to arms and legs. Eat a light meal (avoid coming on an empty stomach), avoid heavy alcohol before treatment, and bring a list of medications and any medical records. Arrive a few minutes early for intake forms.

What should I expect after a session?

Answer: Many patients feel relaxed, sometimes tired, and may notice immediate or gradual symptom improvement. Avoid heavy exercise or alcohol for several hours. Follow any at-home advice from your practitioner. If you experience unusual pain, fever, or infection signs, contact us.

Cosmetic / Facial acupuncture

Answer: Facial acupuncture may improve circulation, reduce puffiness, stimulate collagen, and improve skin tone without injections. It’s considered a complementary cosmetic treatment; multiple sessions are usually needed for visible changes.

The science behind acupuncture

Research has shown the efficacy of acupuncture vs. a placebo for decades, now emerging medical imaging/technology is helping us see the effects of acupuncture as a treatment is occurring and thus better understand the physiological pathways affected.

Acupuncture is known to work in four key ways:

> Restoring normal brain functioning via homeostatic effects
> Increasing circulation + reducing inflammation throughout the body
> Stimulating the central nervous system, creating biochemical changes
> Direct response releasing tight muscles and trigger points

Acupuncture points are a meeting place of blood, nerve, lymph and an access point to the body’s messenger system of connective tissue. It works via the fascia to send messages to stimulate the brain. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. For example, hormones such as dopamine and serotonin or endorphins and enkephalins. These biochemical changes stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
